Ipswitch Network Management Division Survey Highlights Importance of Forensic Log Management Within a Wider Compliance Initiative Thursday 13 October 2011 PDF Print Regulatory Compliance Issues Paramount to Network Administrators Lexington, Mass ─ October 13, 2011 ─ Ipswitch Inc.’s Network Management Division, developer of the WhatsUp Gold suite of innovative IT management solutions, today released the results of a survey of some of its 100,000 customers on how necessary forensic event log management capabilities are to network security initiatives. The survey found that almost two thirds (65.4%) of respondents said that log management is very helpful when it comes to maintaining and managing Event Log and Syslog activity in line with increasingly stringent compliance standards. Regulatory compliance is an important consideration for any modern business, however many find the need to retain and report on Event Log and Syslog activity overwhelming. Compliance standards such as Sarbanes Oxley, HIPAA, FISMA, PCI, MiFID and Gramm-Leach Bliley require organisations to maintain an auditable log of their Syslog files to determine who has accessed the data and what they have done with it. The complete results to the question: “How helpful is having forensic event log management capabilities to your network security initiatives?” were: • Very helpful – 65.4% • Somewhat helpful – 21.2% • Minimally helpful – 4.8% • Not helpful – 8.7% As modern day businesses use, store and exchange nearly all the data within their IT environments, network security and health monitoring is crucial to maintaining the desired levels of information security and privacy. “Log management has become paramount to all businesses due to the increasing number of compliance standards being introduced across different industries. The penalties associated with improper management of these standards can result in severe financial penalties for an organisation,” says Ipswitch Network Management Division president, Ennio Carboni. “Through appropriate management of Event Log and Syslog files, organisations can be safe in the knowledge that they do not fall foul to regulatory compliance penalties.” Last month, Ipswitch Network Management Division announced the latest version of its comprehensive log management software solution, WhatsUp Log Management v10.
