The Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC) has signed a contract with ICM to design and install its entire IT infrastructure. The MTC is a member of the High Value Manufacturing Technology Innovation Centre, part of the Government’s £200million investment in a network of Technology Innovation Centres which promote the expansion of Britain’s manufacturing sector to become more competitive in global markets.

ICM will design and install the network and IT infrastructure for the MTC building, which spans 13,500 square metres, and will support more than 300 users. The HP converged infrastructure will allow MTC to accelerate deployment of IT services and also deliver the flexibility for its IT usage to grow with the business. ICM has used a mixture of technologies to achieve the stated goals of the MTC, including blade technology, virtualisation and unified communications.

MTC’s IT will also be monitored remotely via ICM’s Birstall data centre. If the data centre is alerted to any problems with the network and IT infrastructure, a dedicated on-site engineer will rectify it, as well as offer day-to-day support to IT users on site.

Leigh Carnes, Operations Director at MTC, said: “As a centre for manufacturing excellence, which bridges the gap between academic research and business, an advanced and reliable IT provision is extremely necessary. ICM will provide us with the backbone to deliver our services under one roof to the country’s leading academics, engineers and industry professionals.”

Rob Lockwood, Professional and Managed Services Director at ICM, said: “ICM’s first-rate capability has once again been proven by winning the tender for an important element of the Government’s plans to boost UK manufacturing. We are very proud to be the essential IT support behind MTC’s mission to convert the UK’s world-class academic research into credible manufacturing solutions.”
