In the past few years, HMRC has paid out tax refunds totalling millions of pounds to construction workers for travel expenses claims dating back up to six years. However, that is all set to change in the New Year as HMRC ends this benefit, with any who may still be entitled to claim for the past five to six years potentially losing out.
RIFT specialise in tax refunds for construction workers. Chief Executive Jan Post explains, “Under HMRC temporary workplace rules, any PAYE employee who uses their own vehicle to travel to and from temporary workplaces may be entitled to a tax refund. Even if an employer pays towards employees travel, they may still be entitled to claim. On average, we can claim from between GBP600 - GBP800 a year from HMRC for each employee who qualifies and currently up to six years can often be claimed back in the first instance, which amounts to a significant amount of money for claimants. This will cease to be the case in the New Year.”
After 31st January 2012 HMRC will no longer accept claims for overpaid tax for the year ending 5th April 2006, and after 31st March 2012 HMRC will no longer accept claims for overpaid tax for the year ending 5th April 2007. After 31st March 2012, only four previous years can be claimed for both PAYE and Self Assessment. From 5th April 2012 eligible tax years will be those ending 5th April 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012. Every April claimants will no longer be able to claim for the earliest year, and the new tax year will come into play.
