Surrey, UK: Pelican Buying Company, the procurement and supply chain management specialist, has today announced it has won a three-year £42m contract to manage the supply of food and food-related products across the UK’s largest local authority; Birmingham City Council (BCC). The comprehensive contract will see Pelican operate as the council’s purchasing experts, managing manufacturer and supplier tendering, contract mobilisation, complete supply chain management including supplier payments.

Pelican is responsible for tendering and managing supply chain contracts for food and drink, catering disposables and light catering equipment for all Directorates of BCC, these include schools, elderly people’s homes, leisure centres and civic and hospitality catering. A dedicated team of three members of staff from Pelican will be based at Birmingham City Council’s office on a full-time basis, in order to integrate with the client and deliver on-the-ground support to the directorates, in addition to being closely supported by Pelican’s head-office in Surrey.

Shabaz Mohammed, Managing Director, Pelican Buying Company said, “We are very excited to have been awarded the contract to manage Birmingham City Council’s food and food-related purchasing. At Pelican, we pride ourselves on delivering a fully transparent, highly professional service where our team of experts take a holistic view of what the client needs and takes ownership of the complete supply process.”

A large proportion of the contract concentrates on the purchasing for over 400 schools, which includes sourcing products that not only meet the Government’s nutritional standards, but also adhere to the council’s sustainable and Fairtrade food procurement policies. Pelican has employed a nutritionist to provide technical expertise and support in product sourcing and nutrition product analysis.

This means ensuring all product tenders are developed to reflect the service user’s exacting requirements, to then making sure the resulting contract mobilises correctly with the chosen supplier. It’s the small details that make a big difference, and it is this that has led Pelican to becoming the pioneers in supply chain management.”
