Montpellier moves in on technology sector

Montpellier PR has launched a specialist technology practice ‘Montpellier Technology’ at a time when brands and services are seeking to gain maximum return on their marketing investment. The new initiative takes the Cheltenham-based full service firm squarely into the rapidly changing IT, telecoms and software industries.

According to PRCA member Montpellier, which has a track record of working with a very broad range of clients in the technology sector including Morgan Advanced Materials & Technology across Europe, the line up of seasoned consultants enables the agency to make inroads into one of the most dynamic and sometimes challenging sectors in marketing communications. Montpellier intends to take advantage of a tightening market for PR services that is increasingly seeing clients expecting only senior-level support from experienced professionals.

Run by a team with more than 100 years combined experience in technology, the new practice is pitching a London quality service at provincial prices. Its first targets will be existing customers with technology strands to their business, followed by new prospects locally and nationally.

“The integrated approach of PR, social media, digital and marketing communications makes the Montpellier proposition increasingly attractive,” says Dr Debbie Smith, head of Montpellier Technology, who joins the Montpellier team from a director role at Freshwater and who works alongside senior consultants Kevin Fiske and Geoff Twibell.

Supported by Montpellier directors Philip Hicks and Guy Woodcock, the team’s credentials include assignments for BAe, Ericsson, Microsoft, Morgan Crucible, National Lottery, Racal, Raytheon, Thales, Securicor, VeriSign and VT Group. The team’s start-up experience is equally strong, covering every stage from funding through to IPO/acquisition.

“Together, our team offers a degree of technical literacy and experience rarely seen in one place. It means broadly that whatever the technology, specialisation or industry, we’re ready to hit the ground running and begin delivering results immediately,” explains Philip Hicks.

The new tech line-up, with an international footprint, has ambitious plans to bring its ‘senior-level approach’ to the market. Dr Smith concludes: “Add to this Montpellier’s proven and truly integrated offering covering media relations, crisis management, graphic design and creative and digital services from e-marketing and Web to social media and SEO, and technology businesses are able to access everything they need to lead in their markets in a single place.”

The core team comprises:

Dr Debbie Smith has 20 years’ agency and in-house experience developing and implementing international PR and marketing communications strategies for a wide range of organisations, including US telecoms manufacturer Tellabs, France Telecom, Edwards, Morgan Ceramics and management consultancy PA Consulting Group. Debbie has a degree and doctorate in chemistry from Balliol College Oxford.

Kevin Fiske, a former industrial journalist, spent eight years with Racal Electronics providing in-house PR support to many of the group's operating companies. After two years with a high-tech PR consultancy he returned to Racal, managing PR for its £500 million turnover security activity. For the last 20 years, with Geoff Twibell, he has advised and supported multiple technology businesses.

Geoff Twibell, also previously a journalist, worked with Decca's aerospace and marine businesses before joining Racal's networking division, playing a decisive role in the PR and political lobbying that led to Racal winning a 10-year, £0.5 billion government contract. Geoff has partnered with Kevin Fiske in delivering services to technology companies for the last 20 years.

Philip Hicks, Montpellier board director and head of PR, has worked across a range of blue chip names including Racal, Chubb, Raytheon, 3M, Microsoft, Lotus, De La Rue and Morgan AM&T. A seasoned PR practitioner and marketer, he has worked in IT, aerospace, defence, security and associated technology sectors in the UK and international markets.

In addition to their Montpellier roles, Kevin Fiske and Geoff Twibell remain directors of the Sage Partnership, the PR consultancy founded in 1989. Debbie Smith remains a director of Helix PR.

Montpellier Technology follows on from a number of sector-focused practices including ‘healthcare & medical devices’ and ‘built environment & infrastructure’. The consultancy states that it will be developing its practice offering across the business and including new offerings to strengthen its award-winning portfolio of products and services.

Over the past six months the consultancy has launched clients in Sweden, the Netherlands, Dubai and Qatar in addition to further developing strategic recommendations for social media and implementation across a range of sectors.
