GRIM8, Aldershot, 3rd & 4th Dec

On 3rd December, 10 keen volunteers at Higher Nature will be taking part in GRIM8, an eight-mile multi-terrain trek through mud and water – why? Read on!

Higher Nature has worked with Performance Nutritionist Dr Justin Roberts, Senior Lecturer at the University of Hertfordshire, for a number of years, during which time he has recommended Higher Nature products to many clients including FA cup-winning football teams. However, as Justin is used to mentoring first-class athletes, he wanted to see if he could coach a team of enthusiastic, though not-so-fit, volunteers to push themselves to the limit, both physically and mentally.

The Challenge

GRIM8 is an annual charity event set off-road at a military testing base in Aldershot, Hampshire, and comprises just over eight miles of undulating terrain including shale, muddy bogs and deep waterpits, and the challenge is (simply!) to get round the course – wet, muddy and all! There’s no time limit, although some of the team have started to show their competitive edge!

The Charity

Justin Roberts has been working with the event’s organisers, the Muscle Help Foundation, for a number of years now to raise funds for children afflicted with muscular dystrophy, and so Higher Nature was delighted to be able to help Justin raise as much money as possible! The project that Justin and the team will be supporting in particular is Muscle Dreams, which quite literally provides children with their chosen once-in-a-lifetime dream.

Training and Testing

As part of Dr Justin’s commitment to supporting the team, he has put together a training and supplement protocol*, including several of Higher Nature’s supplements, such as Glutamine (the body’s most abundant amino acid, which is depleted after exercise), SuperPhyte (to give antioxidant protection) and Essential Omegas 3:6:7:9 (to help as an anti-inflammatory and to maintain cell membrane structure). The team has been attempting to follow the training regime as closely as possible, which in itself has been a challenge!

What’s more, Justin’s team of physiologists at the University of Hertfordshire is providing in-depth testing to measure their fitness levels before and after the event.

“I thought GRIM8 would provide the perfect opportunity to kick-start a regular exercise regime rather than just talk about doing it – being able to do it within a team is great as there is always someone there to encourage you to keep at it – and if I can raise some money for charity too, that would be brilliant.”
- Philippa Felton, Consumer Marketing Executive

Justin popped into Higher Nature to act as Mr Motivator and to give the team an insight into what to expect during the challenge itself. Justin stressed the importance of eating well in the weeks leading up to the challenge, as that will help on the day. He concluded by assuring the slightly nervous team that he will be “getting the last team member round the course, no matter what!”

After the event, and once they’ve recovered(!), the intrepid volunteers will return to the university to see how much their fitness levels have improved – so watch this space!

If they can do this – so can you!
