On the 24th November 2011, Camilla will meet with the cadets at New Scotland Yard to present a cheque from the Al Fayed Charitable Foundation matching the funds raised by the Hackney Cadets to date. The cadets have been working hard to raise money to take 12 VPC’s to The Gambia on the 12th April 2012 to start this vital work. Fund raising activities so far include; a 28 mile bike ride, a 14 mile run, bag packing at the supermarket and jumble sales. The Hackney Cadets are recruited through the Hackney Police, who have identified teenagers and young adults some of whom are vulnerable. This group of young people have been given the opportunity to attend various accredited courses and gain qualifications in numerous useful skills including bike maintenance. The Hackney Police have launched the ‘Bikes 2 Gambia’ project using unclaimed and scrap bicycles seized by the Metropolitan Police. The cadets then fix andrefurbish the bikes and learn how to maintain them using the knowledge gained through the course. Re-constructed bikes have already been sent over to The Gambia as part of this project. The intention of this trip, is for the cadets to teach the children in The Gambia to fix and maintain their bicycles themselves, saving hours of walking as it can be as far as 20 miles to school each day. The cadets also plan to build a bike shelter to keep the bikes safe. “The Foundation is very pleased to be part of this wonderful cause. Not only do the Cadets see first-hand the rewarding results of their hard work, but they will receive immense personal satisfaction knowing the skills they have acquired will greatly benefit the children in The Gambia.” Said Camilla Al Fayed. “Camilla’s generous offer to match the funds raised by Hackney cadets will make all the difference. This now brings our goal of going to The Gambia a more realistic prospect and with the cadets’ continued fundraising efforts – Gambia here we come!” Commented Jill DiMartino, Hackney Volunteer Police Cadet Manager.
