November 28th, 2011 - Excitor DME has been selected as the solution of choice for the realisation of British American Tobacco's mobilisation strategy. The pioneering DME solution was chosen for its ability to meet strict data security requirements as well as to deliver on the company’s business goals for mobility.

British American Tobacco recognises the flexibility and choice offered by the current consumerisation trend and the importance of supporting staff choosing and using their own iPhone, iPad and Android devices at work. However, security is paramount for the FTSE 10 company and the Excitor solution gives British American Tobacco complete control over corporate data on mobile devices, without compromising the privacy of staff’s personal data which is kept separate and private to the user.

Phil Colman, CIO at British American Tobacco, set out the reasons for adopting Excitor DME:

“With the pace, scale and complexity of our business increasing, our workforce needs the tools to support them in doing their job, in the way they wish to do it. However, with the rapid development of new and more powerful smart phones it would be expensive to keep pace with new technology and provide these as ‘secured’ corporate devices.

Phil Colman continues: “British American Tobacco has therefore needed to think differently about how it maintains security, while offering employee’s choice. DME from Excitor enables us to do this as we can securely separate corporate data from personal files allowing the use of employees’ personal devices at work for the first time. Excitor’s application mobilization platform, AppBox also offers the flexibility to create and deploy business applications such as access to our intranet or holiday approval system to the secure ‘corporate’ area on the mobile device making it a cornerstone for British American Tobacco’s ambitious mobile strategy, which goes far beyond mobile email. We will make this technology available across 180+ countries to our 20,000 mobile workers over the next few years.”

Notes for Editors
1. British American Tobacco will initially look to support mobile email and personal information management (PIM) including contact lists and calendar functions. They will then move on to richer functions like RSS feeds within the secure partition, and business applications including a full Corporate Directory, a procurement viewer for reviewing and approving purchase orders, travel approvals and intranet services, all through Excitor's Mobile Enterprise Application Platform (MEAP).

2. Founded in 1902 British American Tobacco has sustained a significant global presence for over 100 years and currently employs more than 60,000 people worldwide. With more than 250 brands in its portfolio the organisation holds robust market positions in each of its regions and has leadership in more than 50 markets

3. Smartphones now make up more than 50% of active devices in many corporate estates and are being used for a multitude of business applications from email to intranet, CRM, workflow automation and job scheduling to name just a few. Mobility can now deliver a clear reduction in operational costs for businesses and offers new ways for companies to deliver better productivity and customer service.
