• {{Thailand’s capital retains its place on UBS’ world’s richest city list.
• Survey ranked 73 of the world’s highest earning cities.}}

Thai capital, Bangkok, is the world’s 65th richest city according to a recent survey conducted by Swiss bank, UBS. The study, carried out in September, tallied a population’s average gross earnings across 73 cities around the world and saw researchers compare these results to a similar corresponding survey carried out in 2009.

DialAFlight, one of the UK’s leading travel operators and provider of thousands of flights to Bangkok each year, believes the results will only further highlight the city’s growing economic influence in Asia and rapid emergence as an attractive global metropolis.

Commenting on the results, a spokesperson for DialAFlight said today:

Bangkok is widely recognised globally as a financial and tourist hub, not only acting as a gateway to Thailand but to the rest of Southeast Asia as well- only Singapore ranked higher for cities representing Southeast Asia in the study.”

“The city’s economic success has been fuelled by the development of a strong financial district, attracting some of the world’s top financial institutions to the region, and a booming tourist trade, which has seen millions of tourists’ visit the city each year.

“This development, driven by infrastructural investment, has of course created thousands of jobs for the city’s nine million residents and helped improve their quality of living.”

Outside of Bangkok and Southeast Asia, UBS’ 2011 results grimly reflect current global economic worries. Unsurprisingly many European cities have fallen down the rankings as a result of the Euro zone crisis and subsequent inflation rate rises. Paris, Athens and Berlin have all fallen down the rankings against comparative figures two years ago.

The Swiss franc’s appreciation against the euro and US dollar has meant Geneva and Zurich, both in Switzerland, have claimed the top two spots as the world’s richest cities.
