London, UK: Atlanta Technology, the IT solutions specialist, has today announced the successful migration to a virtualised infrastructure for the largest provider of specialist services in education, mental health and learning disabilities, The Cambian Group. The transition to a virtualised infrastructure has enabled Cambian to future-proof its IT by adopting twelve virtual servers, in place of nine existing physical servers, saving procurement costs of purchasing new physical hardware, the ongoing maintenance and support fees, in addition to improving Cambian's green credentials.
The project also included the implementation of a new Dell Compellent Storage Area Network (SAN) with a capacity of 24TB, to replace an existing HP SAN. The Dell Compellent Fluid Data architecture combines a powerful data movement engine, virtualised software applications and an active hardware platform to provide The Cambian Group with efficiencies and long-term protection in a highly-scalable storage environment.
Paul Follan, Group IT Manager of The Cambian Group said, “The decision to migrate to a virtualised environment has been on our agenda for some time, dependent upon relocating our core infrastructure to a new datacentre, which also coincided with reaching the end of shelf life of our current server hardware. Not only did it make sense from a financial perspective and future proofing our core, but our continued rapid growth requires the IT function to be able to quickly deliver expansion to existing platform for new systems at short notice to the business. Also at Cambian we are very mindful of power consumption and associated business costs, and on being an environmentally-aware business and so this route offers a number of benefits. Atlanta Technology were part of the datacentre relocation project which required Cambian to source a new datacentre outside of the central London electric grid from where we operate and identified a fit-for-purpose facility in Berkshire, which we have now moved to and will enable us to future-proof our IT portfolio.”
Continues Paul Follan, “I’m pleased to report that we have already seen significant cost savings, for example, we have increased the number of core servers available to us from nine to twelve since we virtualised, saving circa £20,000 on hardware procurement. We are now in a position to deliver systems rapidly by contacting Atlanta and agreeing the specification in advance and very quickly we have another server available to us, without any delays and without it being at significant capital expense to the company. Plus, there is the consideration of the green benefits. When you consider the cost of power today, it is very expensive and so now, thanks to the virtualised infrastructure, we are able to keep a lid on power consumption due to not having to power or cool physical servers. This reduces our carbon footprint and saves us money from reduced hosting costs.”
Simon Kelson, Managing Director of Atlanta Technology added, “We have been working with The Cambian Group for a number of years to support the team with its ICT needs, and the ability to keep in step with the growth of the business has been one of the hallmarks of our partnership. We are pleased to have supported Cambian migrate to a fully virtualised operation, which provides a flexible, future-proofed infrastructure, and which doesn’t incur the significant outlay related to physical networks but instead provides cost savings and helps towards the company’s carbon reduction commitment.”
