being the only fully accredited CESG solution of its type, it enables us to fulfil our security obligations

Council implements Becrypt Trusted Client to enable secure remote access to network and facilitate cost reduction strategy

London, UK, 17 January 2012 – Becrypt, a leading provider of information assurance solutions, today announces a partnership with Islington Council, to provide its Trusted Client solution to the council’s workforce, enabling employees to work remotely and securely access the council’s network. A key differentiator from the competition is that Trusted Client is the only solution of its type on the market that has full CESG accreditation for the handling of data up to Impact Level 2 (which covers all of Local Authority level data). Furthermore, Trusted Client will enable the council to address some of the cost reduction initiatives they are embarking on as a consequence of massive budget cuts imposed by the UK Government on the public sector. Islington Council alone needs to make savings of £100million over four years – the equivalent of one third of net total budget.

Islington Council selected Becrypt’s Trusted Client solution to provide secure remote working and data encryption for its entire workforce. Becrypt Trusted Client is implemented to ensure that ‘corporate’ data cannot leak onto the host PC, and that any malware from the host’s PC will not infect the network. The partnership will help the Council realise its drive to cut costs through estate rationalisation and co-location, as staff will be able to work from any department, in any office, with no disruption to their productivity.

Becrypt’s Trusted Client solution is available to Islington Council’s 3,000-strong workforce to enable flexible working and fulfils its social inclusion policy to enable employees to work flexibly. Furthermore, the solution offers an attractive option for staff who may be reluctant to take council laptops home with them either through fear of losing or damaging them, or simply because they are too heavy to carry. The lightweight but robust key-fob format of the Becrypt product means that staff can plug it into their own home PCs with no risk of virus infection or cross-contamination.

“Trusted Client was the knockout product of Infosec 2009, and it ticked a lot of boxes for us: being the only fully accredited CESG solution of its type, it enables us to fulfil our security obligations, while ensuring that we can accommodate our employee’s flexible working requirements,” said Adrian Gorst, Head of ICT Service Delivery, Islington Council. “Becrypt had the only solution which provided the functionality and security we needed, while remaining cost effective.”

By using Becrypt’s Trusted Client solution, Islington Council achieves an invaluable addition to business continuity that translates into a significant return on investment. For example, should staff be kept away from work due to transport problems, adverse weather or because of a sick child, they can carry on business as usual by plugging the Becrypt device into their home PC. In financial terms, this single day of productivity will cover the cost of Trusted Client, a real advantage in today’s tough economic climate.

“The implementation of Trusted Client for Islington Council marks a significant stride forwards in the council’s cost reduction strategy, which is driven centrally by the Government as they seek to reduce their real estate and associated costs, while also providing secure and productive flexible remote working,” said Bernard Parsons, CEO, Becrypt. “Organisations need to be able to offer employees the opportunity to work remotely and ensure that they are protected from malware and viruses from home PCs accessing their networks. Greater flexibility also means that business continuity can be maintained in the event of unforeseen circumstances, such as last year’s large snow fall preventing many workers from travelling to their places of work.”

About Islington Council

Islington Council is an inner London borough in north London. Since the May 2010 local elections Islington has been Labour-controlled. The council’s key aim is to achieve a fairer Islington because whilst the borough is geographically small, Islington's population is diverse.

Islington is home to some of the wealthiest people in the UK living in some of the most desirable neighbourhoods in the capital. However, Islington is also home to real poverty and deprivation and is officially the 14th most deprived local authority in England.

Islington is being hit harder than any other London borough by government cuts – the council has to save around £100million between 1 April 2011 and 31 March 2015. This is due to a combination of a cut in government grants, together with additional costs outside of our control, for example, the increasing cost of waste disposal, or changes in the borough’s population meaning that more people need council services.
