Western Europe tops list of destinations for U.S. residents moving abroad
• New Study by UniGroup Worldwide UTS reveals global movement trends
• UK, Germany and Switzerland in top five destinations for U.S. emigrants
London, UK, 19 January, 2012 – The International Migration Study conducted by UniGroup Worldwide UTS, found that more household goods moves from the UK and Germany were made to the US than from any other country around the world, whereas Germany followed by the UK, were the top two countries for people moving from the US.
Consistent with last year’s results, it was countries from Western Europe which topped the list of destinations for U.S. residents moving abroad indicating that Europe remains an attractive destination for migrating Americans.
The UK was closely followed by several other European countries including Germany (No. 2), Ireland (No. 4), the Netherlands (moving up year-on-year from No. 7 to No. 5), France (No. 7), and Switzerland (No. 10).
Asian countries appear higher and more frequently on the top destination lists, and there were more moves from the U.S. to China than moves from China to the U.S last year.
UniGroup’s research also found that more household goods moves were made from the United States to Japan, Hong Kong, Brazil and Italy in 2011 than the number of moves from those countries to America.
Since releasing its first study in 2010, UniGroup UTS has expanded its data to include U.S. shipment trends to/from Canada, as well as intra-country data from their regional headquarters in Europe and Asia. The 2011 study has grown to include more than 25,000 household goods moves compared to 2011’s 15,000 moves for major corporations.
President of UniGroup UTS Brian Iles commented, "UniGroup UTS continues to be a leader in global household goods moves to and from the U.S. and around the world,” said. “UniGroup UTS plans to provide more in depth research in order to identify those trends which provide insight into what is happening with overall migration patterns internationally.”
UniGroup Worldwide UTS (UniGroup UTS) is affiliated with U.S. moving leaders Mayflower Transit and United Van Lines. United Van Lines, America’s #1 Mover, has released an annual domestic migration study for the last 35 years.
