The offices illustrate how it is possible to generate an enviable work space on a tight budget

Award winning Peldon Rose Workplace Consultants has undertaken the design and build of a new global centre for Save the Children International (SCI). This is key to the worldwide transformation of the organisation, which consolidates the programming efforts of its international members who work in 120 countries around the world.

The contemporary offices are not stereotypically corporate and provide a more creative environment. They are designed to give staff a sense of belonging and purpose. The comfortable and efficient work spaces aid staff collaboration. They are built across one floor, covering 15,000 sq. ft to accommodate a growing team as the worldwide transition takes place. The offices illustrate how it is possible to generate an enviable work space on a tight budget, with the help of gifts in kind (IKEA, Polycom and Peldon Rose) and a competitive rent deal with the landlord, the National Gallery Trust.

Jitesh Patel, Chief Executive Officer, Peldon Rose Workplace Consultants said:

‘’There is an element of ‘one team, one organisation’, which is important during a fast-moving period of consolidation for SCI. We chose our finishes, fittings and furnishes carefully, using strong design elements such as modern sofas and low tables placed amongst the work stations. These are not expensive but perform outstandingly and look spectacular”.

Apart from meeting and small special Skype/privacy rooms, the floor is open plan. There are no directors’ offices. There is an open plan area for larger meetings with bench seating, and a place for people to sit and eat at dining tables. The office reflects the organisation’s ‘fluid’ way of working, using networks of people and external partners, with less emphasis on hierarchy and rigid structures than might be the norm.

The organisation receives a high number of visitors, and meeting rooms incorporate Save the Children’s brand values with glass panels etched with words such as ‘ambition’ and ‘integrity’.

Caroline Stockmann, Chief Financial Officer, Save the Children International said:

“We now have a space that will assist enormously with one of the most important changes in Save the Children’s history. The offices are inspirational and cheerful. Our staff can work efficiently, find places to relax and feel valued. We have built a real partnership with Peldon Rose and are impressed by their ways of working and speed of design implementation. The company far exceeded our expectations”.

Other original design features consist of an open library draped with white sheer curtains in a circular setting with a round carpet, low arm chairs in two-tone colours of blue and brown or beige and brown, a coffee table and bookshelves.
Lifestyle imagery of children is installed throughout the office to depict the organisation’s work around the world. Despite having a building with low ceilings, clever lighting and design using plenty of glass partitioning ensures the offices are light and airy.

SCI moved in with 55 personnel, which will grow to around 130 people and could accommodate approximately 160 staff during the height of the global transition.
