a record number of divorcees filed for a divorce in England and Wales without resorting to hiring lawyers.

According to statistics released today by online divorce provider Divorce-Online.Co.UK, during the first quarter of 2012, a record number of divorcees filed for a divorce in England and Wales without resorting to hiring lawyers.

The type of consumer opting for a diy divorce cuts across all geographic areas and income levels. Online divorce services now play a major role in the divorce process for many divorcing couples in the UK.

With legal aid being withdrawn in 2013 and mediation becoming all but compulsory in the majority of family law cases, Divorce-Online believes many more people will realise that they have to be practical and come to an agreement about their divorce arrangements or they are going to have to pay to fight cases which can only be a good thing as far as the company is concerned as it should lead to more agreement and much less litigation.

Mark Keenan, founder and Managing Director of Divorce-Online believes that as more people resolve their disputes through mediation it will mean more business for his company as couples will want to put their agreement into effect without paying the high hourly rates of traditional Solicitors to have the legal documents drawn up and filed at court.

He says, “We are already working with mediators to offer our services to them as a package and this is working very successfully. In addition we offer a barristers advice service so that clients can get access to legal advice for a fixed fee on the terms of their mediated settlement before signing on the dotted line”.

"This ensures they not only get a mediated agreement, they also get one which has had the benefit of legal advice but without having to spend thousands of pounds on Solicitors which can only be a good thing for the couples concerned"

Divorce-Online charges £299 for a divorce with a financial order.
