Newport's Big Splash

a huge celebration of live music, family friendly entertainment, BMX Flatland, circus and theatre shows, street entertainers and a Sunset Spectacular

The Big Splash is returning and preparing to make waves yet again in Newport City Centre this July. Big Splash 2012 will return on the weekend of Friday 13 until Sunday 15 July and will be a huge celebration of live music, family friendly entertainment, BMX Flatland, circus and theatre shows, street entertainers and a Sunset Spectacular. Make the Big Splash part of your UK family holiday in Wales.

There will be seven fun zones; ADMIRAL SOUNDWAVE STAGE, RIVERFRONT FREE HOUSE, URBAN EDGE, SQUARE TASTIC, FUN OF THE FAIR, ULTIMATE USK and PARKLIFE. The weekend of fun, spectacle and entertainment follows on from the success of the last two years and will see Newport being taken over with a host of indoor and outdoor events on both sides of the River Usk, John Frost Square, The Riverfront, Newport Centre and Rodney Parade.

Kicking off the weekend’s activities, an ideal choice for your UK family holiday, will be a giant Bhangra pop-up dance off with live band RSVP on the ADMIRAL SOUNDWAVE STAGE. The public will be invited to join other dancers in a massive pop-up dance by learning the choreographed routine from a pre-recorded video before the live event. The live music from a host of local and UK bands will continue on the outside stage near the Red Wave sculpture late into the night of Friday 13 July and throughout the day and night of Saturday 14 July.

The highlight of the weekend will be in the ULTIMATE USK zone on the banks of the River Usk with the Sunset Spectacular. The public will be treated to a spectacular aerial show with fire, acrobats and heliospheres performing to a live music mash-up provided by the unique combination of classical musicians from Sinfonia Cymru and electronic musician Zwolf (Tom Raybould). The Sunset Spectacular will be at 9pm on Saturday 14 July and the viewing area will be by the Red Wave sculpture.

URBAN EDGE will be based in and around the Newport Centre and will be a zone focused on urban arts and activities for teenagers. Young people will be able to join in on and watch amazing BMX tricks, a dance competition and free breakdancing workshops.

John Frost Square will be taken over with lots of free, fun and family friendly entertainment in SQUARE TASTIC from 12pm till 5pm on Saturday 14 July. There will also be a number of free circus and theatrical performances in THE RIVERFRONT FREE HOUSE.

Throughout the weekend there will be a wide selection of STREET PERFORMERS at the event and also a selection of fun rides, workshops, activities, and climbing wall in the FUN OF THE FAIR zone near the University building and Riverside Car Park areas.
