The Scottish Salmon Company

Staff will be able to request holidays and those on an annualised contract can instantly find out their hours worked

Salmon company rolls-out RealFlair’s solution from Advanced Business Solutions

The Scottish Salmon Company, the leading independent producer of superior Scottish salmon, is implementing a Workforce Optimisation solution to increase operational efficiency and support the company’s plan to double salmon production (to 40,000 tonnes) within the next five years.

The Scottish Salmon Company has contracted Advanced Business Solutions (Advanced) to provide a Workforce Optimisation solution from resource management development company, RealFlair. Workforce Optimisation is being integrated with The Scottish Salmon Company’s existing Advanced human resource system (OpenPeople) and will be live in June 2012.

Workforce Optimisation is a web-based solution that will be rolled-out to 100 staff members at the headquarters in Edinburgh and the company’s two processing units in Stornoway and Argyll. It will subsequently be rolled-out to more than 40 marine and freshwater sites.

The RealFlair solution, which will replace Excel timesheets, will prove key to managing complex staff rostering needs. The solution will also provide managers with full visibility of the company’s comprehensive staff roster at the touch of a button. This will help to save time, frustration and costs associated with traditional scheduling methods.

Debra Nichol-Storie, HR Director, The Scottish Salmon Company, says, “Our existing rostering solution is manually-intensive and does not provide instant visibility of which staff are working and when. We recognised the need for a solution that could better support our rostering needs and which is able to manage an annualised hours system.”

The Scottish Salmon Company’s HR system provider, Advanced, recommended Workforce Optimisation from RealFlair as it is ideal for organisations with complex staff rostering needs. It also seamlessly integrates with Advanced’s OpenPeople HR system which The Scottish Salmon Company has been using for the past five years. Advanced signed a partnership agreement with RealFlair Limited in 2011.

Workforce Optimisation provides managers with the necessary information and foresight to assign the most cost-effective employees to certain shifts, minimising costly overtime. It also enables managers to match available staff resources to business demand, further cutting labour costs. In addition, managers have more control over hours worked and are able to monitor and record annualised hours, better manage absenteeism and electronically authorise holidays.

Nichol-Storie says, “The new Workforce Optimisation solution will enable smarter rostering, improving efficiencies and cutting costs. The administration time freed-up with the new solution will be used for value-adding activities, enabling improved business performance and supporting our ambitious growth plans.”

Nichol-Storie adds, “Life will also be easier for staff when they are up and running with the new solution. Staff will be able to request holidays and those on an annualised contract can instantly find out their hours worked – it’s the most user-friendly rostering solution on the market!”
