Apple’s backfired attempt to quietly drop its marketing claims that its hardware is immune to viruses has resulted in a 310% increase in searches for anti-virus software for Macs on a money saving website.

Just a few days after Apple tried to quietly remove its marketing claims that its hardware was immune to viruses, it is clear that Mac owners are starting to panic buy to protect their machines; as searches for anti-virus software specifically for Macs has increased by 310% when compare to the previous week.

Money saving website, interrogated its on-site search data to discover the 310% increase after spotting a marked increase in Apple and anti-virus related searches over the last 48 hours.

The site is expecting a further increase in anti-virus software searches for Apple products, as more consumers discover that their Macs are not as safe as they thought.

Kaspersky (38% of clicks) and Norton (34% of clicks) lead the way in terms of the most clicked on products that consumers are looking at to protect their Macs, with McAfee (14% of clicks) coming in third place and the rest of the products in the market place accounting for the remaining percentage.

Speaking about the rise in searches, Marketing Director George Charles said,

“Whilst Apple has lost a vital marketing claim about their product they are no doubt reaping the benefits in terms of the increased amount of sales they must be doing of anti-virus software for Macs via their online and offline stores.”

“The increase in searches has been absolutely staggering and we at fully expect this to carry on over the next few weeks as Mac owners race to protect their products.”
