It’s always been our goal to enable developers to share code and expertise with peers, to help accelerate the flow of knowledge and information

London, UK – July 16th , 2012 – Actuate Corporation (NASDAQ: BIRT), The people behind BIRT® and the leader in open source Business Intelligence (BI), today announced the winners of the semi-annual “Plug In 2 BIRT” developer competition. The Plug In 2 BIRT competition, which ran through April 30, 2012, was open to developers worldwide and hosted by BIRT Exchange, a dedicated online resource for the BIRT developer community and the ActuateOne product line built on BIRT.

Actuate founded and co-leads the BIRT (Business Intelligence and Reporting Tools) open source project. BIRT is the only top level BI focused project within the Eclipse Foundation, the home of the open source Eclipse Development Framework, the leading IDE worldwide. Today, BIRT is the most widely adopted BI and reporting technology with millions of downloads and more than 1.5 million developers worldwide. BIRT’s active and growing developer community represents all types of organisations. The Plug In 2 BIRT competition tapped into this community to create plug-ins that further enrich BIRT development capabilities. Actuate is pleased to announce the Plug In 2 BIRT Spring 2012 winners:

• Christian Brell who had the idea to develop a barcode plug-in while reading a forum post on BIRT Exchange. BIRT BarcodeItem allows users to add a new Palette element to add different types of barcodes in reports.
• Subhas Bhat who developed YQL ODA Plug-in, a unified interface to use different web services as a BIRT Data Source for Yahoo! Query Language (YQL), a language similar to SQL.
• Raghava J who dedicated his time to enriching the multiple flat file experience with an open document architecture (ODA), Multi Flat File Aggregator.

“I’ve been using BIRT since 2006 and feel committed to the BIRT project in a special way,” said Christian Brell, software engineer, trainer and consultant for Orientation in Objects (OIO) and Plug In 2 BIRT Spring 2012 winner. “BIRT Exchange is an excellent place for all BIRT related questions and was a big help for me in previous projects. For me, this competition was a great learning experience and an opportunity to give back to the BIRT Exchange community.”

“We want to thank the talented developers who submitted their work—this competition was further validation on what a creative and thriving community we have with BIRT Exchange,” said Ray Gans, BIRT Community Manager for Actuate. “It’s always been our goal to enable developers to share code and expertise with peers, to help accelerate the flow of knowledge and information within the community, so developers can more easily meet their end-users’ reporting needs.”

Eligible plug-ins included those for ODA Drivers, Emitters, Report Item Extensions and Chart Extensions. All Plug In 2 BIRT entries are available for download and free use on either BIRT Exchange DevShare or the BIRT Exchange Marketplace. The winners received a 3rd generation iPad (32 GB with WiFi).
