We are immensely grateful to our engineers – some of whom worked a 24 hour shift in order to deliver on time

Wednesday 1st Aug 2012

An innovative British internet service provider has been able to connect troops providing security at the Olympic sites to family, friends and some much-needed entertainment via Wi-Fi in just four days – thanks to groundbreaking use of cutting edge technology.

"When the MOD contacted us last week to see if we could assist with Internet access for the some of the troops now deployed at sites across London, we were delighted to be able to help," explains Wifinity's Joint MD Aubone Tennant. "We took the call on Tuesday and by Friday had increased our coverage to over 5,000 troops in 7 locations."

"We already supply Wi-Fi to many of the UK’s troops stationed in London," Tennant continues. "So we were able to use our existing infrastructure to up capacity into the sites where troops are stationed."

"Providing instant connectivity to numerous locations across London posed some real challenges and we had to be really imaginative in how we used the equipment. We are immensely grateful to our engineers – some of whom worked a 24 hour shift in order to deliver on time."

Wifinity supplies high-speed, reliable internet access to troops in 50 MOD sites in the UK and Germany (including the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst). With no contract, no BT landline requirement and free installation, the company is the ideal choice for military personnel who are constantly on the move.

Major Cathy Bradshaw of the Op Olympic Media Ops Team said that the troops in the accommodation had been “pleasantly surprised” by the broadband access and added: "I would pay tribute (to those who delivered the Wifi) because I think what has been achieved is very impressive."

"We believe we make a substantial difference to the welfare of soldiers stationed here and abroad," says Aubone Tennant. "So we were particularly pleased to be able to do our bit for the Olympic effort, and make the experience of soldiers who’ve had to cancel leave to step up to the plate that bit more bearable."
