British businessmen and women place more importance on the look of their office than the car they drive

British businessmen and women place more importance on the look of their office than the car they drive according to research by, the UK’s only used office furniture broker.

Business is booming for whose owner, Adrian Preston, attributes the success to TV series like Mad Men and The Good Wife re-igniting an interest in corporate design.

The company interviewed 500 businessmen and women throughout the UK between the ages of 30 – 55 about the “Mad Men Effect” and discovered:

What is the most important office status symbol?

• The size of your desk 53%
• Your job title 29%
• The car your drive 12%
• The clothes you wear 6%

What area of design interests you most:

• Office design 37%
• Car design 24%
• Home interior 21%
• Garden design 18%

What TV programme most influences your attitude to your office surroundings:

• Mad Men 66%
• The Good Wife 27%
• 24 6%
• The Apprentice 1%

Adrian often gets calls from clients who want to recreate Don Draper or Roger Sterling’s offices from Mad Men but without spending a fortune. His business brokers a range of high-end furniture and fittings which, coupled with the company’s design capabilities, means they can offer a great look at the fraction of the cost.

Taking up the story, Adrian commented:

“In the past, a car was a real status symbol. However, more people are now downsizing for both economic and environmental reasons. It’s cool to drive a small car these days.

That said, those in business still retain a fiercely competitive element - car envy has been replaced by desk envy it seems. In Mad Men, the office is at the heart of the action – be it business, drinking or sex – and it’s made stylish offices aspirational”.
