Global broadcasters are being warned of the financial risks of dashing to buy the latest technology without first working out how best to use it and then how to keep it up and running. The digital era is creating as many pitfalls as opportunities according to Astec MD, Andy Tripp, who says the competitive impetus to stay ahead of everyone else could lead to disaster.

“The failure of any of the multitude of systems now being used by broadcasters could lead to channels going off air, serious breaches of regulations, huge fines, hundreds if not thousands of consumer complaints and the loss of vital advertising revenue” he says.
“Broadcasting is expensive - whatever services you provide. The more services, the bigger the cost. And that often means a huge initial outlay before there’s any chance of an income stream to pay for it. So it is vital broadcasters put in the best systems to monitor and control all of their various outlets - all of the time. It’s very difficult to shake off a reputation for being unreliable once things go wrong.”

Can broadcasters avoid a major crisis? Yes they can, according to Andy Tripp, by working smarter and utilising modern technology to integrate their disparate systems.

“We provide solutions that take a unified view over a broadcaster’s entire platform. They’ll not only make each service more efficient but also include early warning systems to prevent a major technology failure. Broadcasters who focus on implementing effective monitoring and control solutions can eliminate up to 99% of the risks involved.”

Astec IT Solutions Ltd will be exhibiting their latest control systems at IBC 2012, Amsterdam RAI Sept 7- 11th September 2012
