Vehicle Quality Solutions, commissioned by BMW, are using TAAP Inspection software to de-fleet 3,500 vehicles used during the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Inspectors based in Dartford are using Motorola ES400 mobile devices loaded with TAAP’s technology to inspect and record mandatory checks, mileage, and any damage for each vehicle. Once inspected and where necessary, repaired, the cars will be re-sold through BMW’s Approved Used Car Scheme.

The inspections are completed on the mobile devices and are then uploaded in real time to a secure web portal hosted on Microsoft Azure. The web portal provides access for supervisors and auditors to the data stored within Microsoft SQL Server, and allows them to review the inspections, set a price for the cost of repairs and the charges that shall be reclaimed.

Inspectors can look the vehicle up on their mobile handset by entering the registration number which then returns the correct vehicle details from a pre-loaded list. TAAP’s inspection software operates on a variety of mobile devices and enables inspectors to accurately assess the condition of a vehicle using pre-defined forms, which can include photographic capacity. Mandatory fields are included within the software to ensure that no information is missed. The technology is similar to that provided to RAC Inspection Services.

VQS are able to data-mine further information collected using Microsoft Excel and PowerPivot Business Intelligence tools. Using data web service connections over a secure link they can run their own ad hoc reports which provide the benefit of being able to identify common faults and trends.

From specification to setup and going live with the technology was less than 5 working days. VQS already owned Motorola ES400 PDAs, installed the software in minutes, and were up and running with minimal training. This included customising the vehicle inspection form and branding the printed report.

Once the inspection is completed, the web portal allows auditors and other users the opportunity to print out a vehicle inspection report summarizing the checks and damage recorded for each vehicle. These are left in the vehicle to provide a paper audit trail as a receipt of the work completed.

Steve Higgon, Product Architect, commented “TAAP is pleased to be working with its longstanding partner VQS to provide an efficient way for a large quantity of vehicle inspections to take place in a relatively short timeframe. Using the straightforward inspection technology on the PDA, the software application allows inspectors to collect all the data they need precisely and efficiently, and the secure web portal provides a central location for data to be stored and analysed.”

The solution provided to VQS was deployed using the TAAP Application framework as a TAAP Store Application. Other products TAAP is deploying using this method include Maintenance, Daily Vehicle Checks, Inspections, Deliveries, and Vending.
