McDonald’s was the second most commonly searched-for destination after ‘petrol station’

Berlin, Germany, 7th September 2012: ‘All roads lead to McDonald’s’ according to the latest destination search statistics revealed by skobbler, developers of the UK’s no.1 iPhone sat nav app ‘GPS Navigation 2’, which just hit the 3 million downloads milestone.

The company analysed UK usage data from its GPS Navigation 2 app from May to July to find the most-visited locations where drivers can pick up food, petrol, coffee, or find accommodation, and found that McDonald’s was the second most commonly searched-for destination after ‘petrol station’.

KFC was the second most searched for fast food brand, followed by Burger King, Nando’s and then Pizza Hut – all of which received more searches than the most popular coffee chain, Starbucks, which was closely followed by Costa.

“The results suggest that aside from fuel, food is the most important thing on our mind whilst on the road, with three out of the top four searches being food related,” said Marcus Thielking, co-founder of skobbler.

“It seems that when we are on the road, we like to treat ourselves to a bit of self-indulgent fast food and McDonald’s continues to rein as the longstanding favourite!”

Other terms high up on the search list included Tesco and Pub which were followed by Airport, Train Station, Restaurant, Shopping and Hospital lower down the list.

Tesco was the most searched for supermarket followed by Asda. Sainsbury’s and Morrisons received fewer searches, leaving Aldi and Waitrose with the least searches.

The most searched for hotel was Premier Inn followed by Hilton Hotels and then Holiday Inn.

More peculiar popular search terms included: the sea, bus stop, tattoo, kebab and sex shop.
