Getting the symbols and wording right on product packaging and labelling is a big deal, yet can be so time-consuming and fraught with risk

- The intelligent content management system for labelling and packaging, which will be exhibited this month at the Medical Device Packaging & Labelling exhibition in Amsterdam, finds a receptive audience as the industry wrestles with compliance updates

Tamworth, UK – September 26th , 2012 – Artwork management and generation company Kallik has reported a surge of interest in its flagship end-to-end content management system for labelling and packaging in the medical device supply sector, as increasing numbers of companies struggle to keep on top of continually changing compliance requirements.

The specialist technology provider today unveiled its plans for the annual Medical Device Packaging & Labelling exhibition and conference this week in Amsterdam.
In addition to exhibiting at the event, Kallik CEO, Neil Gleghorn will deliver a conference presentation entitled ‘Managing the complexity and content for labelling across global markets’ – a talk that will take a look at how reacting quickly and accurately to updates in packaging and labelling, due to regulatory changes or product developments, is crucial in today’s Medical Device market.

Kallik will also use the event to announce an extension to its strategic partnership with Global Vision. As a result of the enhanced relationship Kallik has now integrated its AMS360 solution with Global Visions’ latest generation of quality control inspection and comparator applications.

Kallik’s prominence at this year’s event reflects the company’s rapidly growing penetration of the medical devices supply sector. The company recently announced two major new clients from the industry, including Danish international supplier Coloplast, and a second global player based in the US.

Both companies have implemented Kallik’s flagship AMS360 solution to centralise and streamline packaging and labelling content creation and editing in an industry which, like the pharmaceutical sector, is subject to frequent regulatory change.
Explaining her company’s reasons for adopting the Kallik automated solution, Jette Byg, Coloplast’s Head of Labelling & Packaging, says, “Until now, every change has meant a real headache and could take months to implement, requiring approvals of local translations from 30-40 countries, incurring ongoing risk.”

Coloplast estimates that, as a result of using the Kallik AMS360 solution, it will be able to reduce its labelling and packaging resources due to much shorter change management cycles. It will minimise instances of wrong labels being printed, and product recalls. Ensuring products go out with correct, readable labels will enhance its image as a company too. “The impact will be huge,” says Jette.

A spokesperson for the US medical devices supplier, meanwhile, says, “We will be able change a symbol very quickly as these are updated, and understand where patent numbers are located as these expire. There will be no longer be a risk of leaving an expired patent on a product, a situation that might have led to us being sued for misbranding. Once all of the content is managed centrally we won’t be exposed to that liability.”

Commenting on the surge of interest in Kallik’s AMS360 solution in the medical device industry, Neil says, “This sub-sector of the healthcare supply market shares many of the same issues facing pharmaceutical organisations. Getting the symbols and wording right on product packaging and labelling is a big deal, yet can be so time-consuming and fraught with risk. As soon as companies see what our software can do, you can see the relief as they realise there’s a reliable, automated solutions which takes care of all this for them.”

The Medical Device Packaging & Labelling event, which takes place on September 26-27 at the city’s Park Plaza Hotel at Amsterdam Airport, sharing the venue with Arena’s 11th Annual Pharma Packaging and Labelling conference, will bring together medical device industry stakeholders to discuss solutions to the latest regulatory and operational challenges with packaging and labelling of device products.
