Rio de Janeiro, Brazil – Aggreko, the world leader in generator rental and temperature control services, has been selected by one of the largest independent renewable power generation companies in Brazil, Dobreve Energia S/A (DESA), to conduct performance tests at the Morro do Ventos windfarms, in Joao Camara, in the Northeast region - an area seeing significant local and international investment in wind energy.
Since 2005, DESA has invested substantially in wind and hydro power. Nowadays, DESA has more than 1000 MW in Wind projects, in different stages of maturity, including development of new projects. In the projects that Aggreko supported, the capacity is about 145 MW.
Aggreko supplied loadbanks for commissioning tests of the Morro dos Ventos Projects. A loadbank re-creates the load that a power source will generate. Once fully operational, the 145 MW from these projects are enough to power about 180,000 homes in a city like Natal, Rio Grande do Norte’s capital. This loadbank testing ensures that the windfarm is ready for grid connection.
“Aggreko is supporting the development of the renewable wind energy market in Brazil by providing vital solutions such as load banks that enable optimised testing of equipment,” said Diogenes Paoli Neto, Managing Director, Aggreko South America. “For many years now, our loadbanks have supported a variety of applications in more traditional sectors such as manufacturing , oil and gas and shipping industries. Our experience is second to none. And our equipment has been built to work with any power source, allowing us support test needs of all technologies, traditional or new.”
About Wind Power
According to the Renewable Energy Police Network for the 21st Century (REN21), in 2010, the global capacity of wind power installed grew 24% over 2009, reaching a total capacity of about 198 GW. Between 2005 and 2010 the average annual growth of generation capacity from wind was 27% per year.
Brazil generates 143 gigawatts of power through wind, which is at least 53% of the current capacity in Latin America - according to the Brazilian Wind Energy Association (ABEEolica).
In the late 90s, the Brazilian government ended the Atlas of the Brazilian Wind Power Potential with measurements at a height of 50m above the surface, which estimated the potential for wind generation in the country of around 143,000 MW. Currently, according to experts from the Ministry of Mines and Energy, the data suggests that the capacity of wind generation in Brazil exceed the 300,000 MW, if measurements are made between 80 and 120 meters high. This fact demonstrates the high potential to be explored in the country.
The viability of this source of generation in the country occurred mainly during the Government Incentive Program for Alternative Sources of Electric Energy (PROINFA), which was established from 2002 to 2010, aiming to increase the share of electricity from alternative sources.
By ABEEolica's assessment, Brazil has 44 windfarms in operation, all built within PROINFA. Despite the great potential of wind power, only 0.5% of the energy produced in Brazil is based on wind. Over the past two years, the federal government has been constructing 141 new ventures, which will be delivered between 2012 and 2013.
Aggreko Brazil, a global leader with 50 years experience in generator rental and temperature control, offers complete power generation services for industry including diesel generator rental and loadbank rental.
Operating in South of America since 2003 and have operations in Brazil, Chile, Peru, Colombia, Venezuela and Argentina.
