Achieves Quick ROI by Proactively Monitoring Operational Data to Increase Security and Improve User Experience and Quality of Service

MAIDENHEAD, UK AND SAN FRANCISCO – 9th October 2012 – Splunk Inc. (NASDAQ: SPLK), the leading provider of software for real-time operational intelligence, today announced that American University of Sharjah (AUS), an internationally accredited, independent, co-educational institution in the United Arab Emirates, is using Splunk® software to identify anomalies in operational data, correlate information to increase security and improve user experience and quality of service.

“Following a security breach, we initially needed a way to automate investigations, to isolate incidents and to identify the perpetrators,” said Will Froning, systems architect, American University of Sharjah. “Splunk was the only solution on the market that could provide a complete view of all the data sources across all of our business units to help identify unusual events and correlate information. Now, we use Splunk as a platform for network operations monitoring and operational and business intelligence.”

AUS has deployed Splunk Enterprise™ across the institution, turning machine-generated data into operational intelligence. Using Splunk software, AUS generates daily reports, which aid in making IT critical decisions. These reports address areas such as capacity, help desk inquiries, bandwidth usage, maintenance, security and other issues relating to the university’s infrastructure that could impact service.

The IT team at AUS reports that it can now identify security and system issues more quickly and provide a speedier resolution to downtime or disruption. The team also reports that it has reduced the department’s monthly costs significantly by using Splunk software to monitor and correlate information relating to bandwidth consumption.

“Splunk can index any data and help create meaningful reports for any situation,” said Froning. “I have learned to throw as much data as possible at Splunk. The more you use it, the more value you get from it.”

“Universities need to protect the integrity of their data resources from outside attackers and from their own users attempting to access sensitive information,” said James Murray, general manager and vice president, EMEA, Splunk. “It is nearly impossible to keep track of the ever-changing security threats by traditional means. Splunk software indexes and analyses big data across complex networks such as those within universities. This allows users to identify and address threats, from one place, before they have a chance to impact the network and users.”
