Going Digital Certificate at Bradford

The impact of Kainos Evolve has already been very positive

- NHS Foundation Trust is already delivering multiple benefits of the next-generation electronic medical records solution across its cochlear implant centre, in advance of a hospital-wide roll-out -

London, October 15th, 2012 – Thriving technology company Kainos has announced that another major NHS Trust has now gone live with its flagship Evolve® electronic medical record (EMR) solution.

Just months after signing a contract with Kainos, Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has already rolled out the advanced digital patient records system across its regional cochlear implant centre in Yorkshire. The unit provides out-patient care in its ‘Listening for Life’ centre, with inpatient surgery being carried out on general adult and paediatric wards with surgery undertaken in general ENT operating theatres.

The regional service, which has a caseload of 650 patients, sees 10 outpatients and performs two complex operations each week on average, went live with Kainos Evolve EMR on August 20th , within the time-frame set out for the deployment. It marked the occasion by presenting a certificate (see photo) to its first clinic patient on August 23rd.

The self-contained nature of the cochlear implant department has allowed Bradford Teaching Hospitals to get the Kainos Evolve EMR system fully functional in record time. This process has also enabled the Trust to learn quick / important lessons prior to a much broader deployment.

It has also allowed the Trust to be ambitious in its goals aiming to eliminate paper from its cochlear implant medical records. The regional centre is using Evolve’s intelligent eForms capability to capture the results of consultations digitally within the clinic. Inpatient appointments still involve paper at this stage however the implementation of bar-coded stationery and a policy of ‘content creation’ (implemented a number of months before).has meant scanned notes are easily navigated as well as being easily accessed within the Evolve system.

The cochlear implant department is also using Evolve’s eDischarge module to automatically issue legible, digital GP notes by post currently but the intention is to move to email.. Emails can be issued instantaneously, ensuring prompt and accurate follow-up in the community.

The next phase of the project, due to begin in the new year will see Evolve being extended across the Trust’s much larger Ear, Nose, Throat & Ophthalmology department. This will be followed by a comprehensive roll-out of the system across the whole Trust when staff from all disciplines will need ready access to digitised patient records.

Bradford is also keen to enhance mobile patient data access, moving this from existing tablet devices to iPads, which are lighter and more intuitive to use. The Trust has worked very closely with Kainos on the design of the new Evolve for iPad application and initial feedback from clinicians who have started to trial the iPad in their Model Clinic environment is very positive.

“The impact of Kainos Evolve has already been very positive,” comments Mark Golding, eMR Solution Architect at Bradford. “Staff are now able to access medical records simultaneously, even when a clinic is underway. And anaesthetists can now access records before the date of an operation. This means they can prepare more effectively – for example with full knowledge of any previous adverse reactions to the anaesthetic.”

On Bradford’s experience of working with Kainos, Mark says, “We’re very happy with the support we’re receiving. This is very much a partnership. Kainos is very receptive to our feedback and we’re working together on even better applications of Evolve through the use of mobile technology. The EMR project is a cornerstone of our transformational ‘Going Digital’ initiative, and we’re excited by the way it’s going and the progress already made.”
