This summer’s Olympics provided the biggest boost in recent history to the fast-growing but historic sport of open water swimming. Perhaps only Captain Matthew Webb’s fabulous first English Channel swim did more – and that was 137 years ago. And while memories of those heady summer days are already fading there’s still plenty of inspiration we can take from the Games.
The open water swimming at the Olympics saw 25 men and 25 women battle it out over almost two hours of racing covering an incredible 10km in the murky waters of Hyde Park’s Serpentine. This was only the second time marathon swimming has been included in the Olympics and it proved a popular draw for spectators with crowds up to five deep crammed against the barriers urging on the swimmers.
Cassandra Patten won a bronze model in the first running of this event at the Beijing Olympics in 2008. As an official commentator for the event she had one of the best views of the proceedings, from a boat that closely followed the swimmers and the tactical battles that played out. For not only are these swimmers fantastically fit, they also need amazing tactical awareness, and be both patient and ruthless if they want to win.
As a former elite swimmer, Patten could track all the moves and has now shared them in the October/November 2012 issue of H2Open, the world’s leading open water swimming magazine.
H2Open Magazine offers training advice, gear reviews and racing tips to open water swimmers, as well as celebrating the pleasures of outdoor swimming and finding the best places to enjoy the water.
