growing demand for ADR as an alternative to resolving commercial disputes in the courts

Today CEDR Asia Pacific a division of the Centre for Effective Dispute Resolution, which a year ago opened a new operational base in Hong Kong, is launching a panel of 18 mediators in response to the increasing frequency of local requests for CEDR´s dispute resolution services, in addition to its training.

The CEDR Hong Kong Practice Group of Mediators has been created to address the growing demand for ADR as an alternative to resolving commercial disputes in the courts. In most instances members of the Group, from a range of legal and professional dispute backgrounds, will be trilingual in Mandarin, Cantonese and English. The mediator will also join the full CEDR Solve Mediator Panel administered in London and disputes resolution users in Hong Kong will have access to the UK Mediator Practice Group, providing mediation for high value claims (averaging in excess of $12 million HK).

CEDR has long been regarded as a leading international trainer of mediators and one of the world’s largest independent (Alternative Dispute Resolution) ADR providers. CEDR has already successfully mediated over 80 commercial disputes in Asia to date, many based in Hong Kong, ranging from construction to retail and finance to technology. CEDR Asia Pacific will continue to offer CEDR´s regular mediation and negotiation training courses in Hong Kong, where it has been active as a training provider for many years, accrediting over 350 mediators to date. It now also uses Hong Kong as a base for managing the cases referred for resolution.

The effectiveness of mediation has already been demonstrated in Hong Kong through a dispute resolved as part of the construction of Hong Kong International Airport over a decade ago. Dr Karl Mackie, CEDR’s CEO, worked with Eric Green from the US on training for the Hong Kong Airport project contracts, working with government officials, contractors, lawyers and engineers to help make the contract run smoothly.

In the last year CEDR has also opened new operations in Dublin to serve Ireland and in Doha to address needs in the Middle East. These openings come as response to the increasing frequency of local requests for CEDR´s dispute resolution services, in addition to its training in mediation and conflict management.
