East Reading, UK, 2nd November 2012 - UTC Reading, a new University Technical College specialising in Computer Science and Engineering, today announced the appointment of its Vice Principal, Wayne Edwards. Working alongside the new Principal Designate Joanne Harper, Wayne will focus on ensuring that the UTC is ready to receive its first tranche of students when it opens its doors in September 2013. Together, Wayne and Joanne will spearhead a number of initiatives and campaigns to promote UTC Reading and encourage young people to apply, working directly with academic and industry partners, as well as the wider Berkshire community.

Sally Dicketts, Chief Executive of Oxford and Cherwell Valley College (OCVC), the lead sponsor of UTC Reading, comments: “We are delighted that Wayne is joining UTC Reading as Vice Principal working alongside Joanne. It is great to have two such pivotal roles secured so early on. Wayne brings over 14 years’ experience in teaching and has an outstanding record for leadership and high standards of student learning and achievement. He has an enviable track record which I am sure will be of great benefit to those who come to UTC Reading.”

Wayne qualified from Liverpool John Moores with an honours degree and a masters degree, both in Sport Science. He then undertook a Post Graduate Certificate in Education from Cheltenham and Gloucester College of Higher Education in Physical Education. Throughout his career Wayne has continued to teach in the Berkshire and Buckinghamshire areas where he successfully held a number of middle management positions before progressing to a leadership position as an Advanced Skills Teacher at The Langley Academy.

Wayne comments on his new appointment: "I am extremely excited to join UTC Reading as Vice Principal and I can't wait to start on this incredible journey. UTC Reading is a great opportunity for the young people in the Thames Valley area. Those who attend will be educated in a state of the art facility with the support of major employers, helping students to develop the practical skills and specialist knowledge in Computer Science and Engineering which will greatly enhance their prospects in the job market."

Wayne starts his new role in January 2013 at which time recruitment for Heads of Departments and other teaching and support staff will be underway. Wayne will help with curriculum planning and structure to make sure that the courses are fit for the aims and goals of the UTC and will also oversee building redevelopment and ensure that Ofsted policies are in place. Wayne will also engage with parents and schools in the area to encourage students interested in specialising in Computer Science and Engineering to enrol.

UTC Reading will be holding its first taster event on 14th November 2012 at partner premises at Reading College, Kings Road, Reading, RG1 4HJ from 5.30 to 8.30pm.
