London which swung the vote. Overall, Barack Obama got 54% of all votes, Mitt Romney got 42%
It was a close call. Barack Obama and Mitt Romney were neck and neck until the final votes came in on Sunday night from one key swing region, propelling Obama into the lead.
If maritalaffair.co.uk were a country, Barack Obama would still be in charge but only by a whisker. Election night came early to one dating website members, giving a glimpse into the political sentiments of married daters and men and women seeking an affair.
The site, asked nearly 1,000 of its members to cast a Democratic or Republican vote over the weekend and collated its results based on regions, in a similar way to how the 36 states will be divided in the official US Presidential election on Tuesday.
In the Marital Affair poll it was London which swung the vote. Overall, Barack Obama got 54% of all votes, Mitt Romney got 42% and just 4% were undecided. But when the results were broken down into 10 regions - North West, North East, Scotland, The Midlands, East Anglia, Wales, The South East, The South West, Northern Ireland and London - apportioning 10% of the voting power to each region, it was a much closer call. Mitt Romney won in four of the regions (South East, Wales, Northern Ireland and East Anglia) and Barack Obama won in six.
London was the final region for members' votes to arrive. Right up until midnight on Sunday, the time when the website closed its online voting page, the Democrat incumbent Obama and his rival Romney repeatedly gained, lost and regained the lead. It wasn't until 15 minutes before voting closed that the final few mouse clicks came in from its London profiles confirming Obama as favourite to take office in the White House.
The adult dating website has over 600,000 members with more than 500 joining everyday. It caters mainly for married daters looking for discrete passion outside of their marriages, who don't necessarily want to leave their spouses, and for single daters who are looking for all the fun of a fling without the complications of commitment.
That perhaps could indicate why its members stand on the liberal end of the political spectrum. Republican candidate Mitt Romney is a staunch conservative. A former Mormon missionary, father of five and a successful businessman, he has been criticised for his old-fashioned views on women's rights and his anti-abortion stance.
MaritalAffair.co.uk's pre-election survey is one of many around the world this week. An MSN poll found that one in eight voters around the world would keep Barack Obama as president and only 19% would vote in Romney. The only country favouring Republican Romney was China! Other polls have focused on Ohio, which is the key swing state, with most putting Obama in the lead.
