On 12th September 2012, Rosetta ran a translation workshop as part of Bexley Grammar School’s outreach programme to teach year 11 students about careers in languages.

This is not the first time that Rosetta has gotten involved to make the world of translation accessible to younger minds. In 2010 and 2011, Rosetta was invited as a guest lecturer at the University of Westminster to provide insight into the daily responsibilities of a project manager in the translation industry.

It was therefore with great enthusiasm that they accepted Bexley Grammar School’s invitation to come and teach students about their experience using languages in business and real-life contexts through talks and workshops. The students selected to participate in this event came from various schools, as being the stronger linguists from each school, interested in using languages in the future. Each workshop lasted 30 minutes and included an introduction to the translation industry plus some short translation-related tests, which were then corrected within the groups.

Berengere Gayon, HR manager for Rosetta Translation, said: “it was a good experience and the students seemed to really enjoy the opportunity to do hands-on translation work. They felt a real sense of achievement when we told them that more complicated versions of the test they had just completed were being used as part of our recruitment procedures. They asked interesting questions and it was clear that before the workshops they thought that their career path as linguists was quite restricted. They came out of the workshops more confident about their career options, which was the intended goal all along.”

Mission accomplished for Rosetta, who received very positive feedback after the event and is likely to participate in the same programme next year. Ms. Gayon added: “when it comes to choosing a career, it is important to know about your options as early as possible, so that you can make informed choices. I am glad Rosetta had the opportunity to assist with this particular event, and certainly look forward to the next one!”
