Belfast actuarial assistant Neil Buchanan is the one to watch, as he tops the 2012 list of Top 30 Under 30 actuaries
The future is looking bright for 23 year old Belfast actuarial assistant Neil Buchanan, as he is ranked no 1 in Actuarial Post’s Top 30 Under 30 actuaries 2012. The full list, released today, has been compiled by leading actuarial digital magazine, Actuarial Post.
Having graduated with a first class honours degree from Queen’s University Belfast, Neil is currently working as an Actuarial Trainee for Spence and Partners.
Neil said “I have much to thank my education for as an Actuarial Science & Risk Management course at Queen’s University Belfast has proved to be an excellent foundation for my career. The structure of the course lends itself to practical experience at an early stage and I benefitted greatly from my placement year on the course in particular.
While very proud to graduate with a first class honours degree from university, my step up into the day-to-day world of work has presented me with a new set of challenges. Working at Spence & Partners as an actuarial trainee, I predominantly work in the “Employer Advisory” section of a constantly growing and successful company. Over a period when making that first step onto the career ladder has been so difficult for young professionals, I am grateful to work for an organisation that continually shows the ambition to progress, despite the difficulties that so many employers are facing. Working with employers and tackling growing pension scheme deficits has proved to be something I relish. My role is further expanded through additional work in accounting, solvency valuations for pension schemes and benefit modelling for schemes which are proposing a move to an alternative benefit structure to reduce future uncertainty.”
Editor Ellie Burns said “This Actuarial Post award category received an amazing response, with over 1000 votes alone, and each nominee was been voted for by their peers in celebration of their actuarial achievements and accomplishments.”
