A book which profiles 140 sporting venues across Great Britain is being launched in November to coincide with the All Blacks tour to Scotland, Wales and England.

Written by Duncan Perkinson, When Kiwis Fly – A Sports Tour of Great Britain shines the spotlight on 140 sporting venues where New Zealand sports people have succeeded over the years.

The book is a celebration of British sporting venues and is a celebration of the New Zealanders who have competed against the odds and been victorious.
When Kiwis Fly covers traditional sporting venues such as Lord’s, Old Trafford and Wimbledon and some sports and venues which many readers will not recognise - Pedestrianism at the Royal Agricultural Hall in the 1880s and Stone Skimming in Scotland.

The book tells the stories of dreams, hopes, disappointment and redemption. It is the story of New Zealand growing up as a nation on the sporting fields of Britain.

According to the author: “New Zealand has many reasons to be thankful to Great Britain. When British colonists travelled to New Zealand they brought their own games with them. This is why New Zealanders play Cricket, Rugby and Golf, not Sumo Wrestling, Handball or Petanque."

Perkinson continues: "Ever since the 1850’s New Zealanders have been travelling to the UK and competing with pride. These successes helped New Zealand grow as a nation.”

Every day, New Zealand sports fans can learn more about these successful sports people on the When Kiws Fly website

Sports fans from around the world travel to the United Kingdom to watch sport and the value of sports tourism can not be underestimated. Nearly 2 million people watched sport when visiting the UK in 2010 and a further million people played sport when they came here.
