22 November 2012 – London, UK: Stonesoft, the network security vendor that discovered advanced cyber threats and Advanced Evasion Techniques (AETs), today announces a research partnership with the School of Computing and Informatics, Nottingham Trent University, which will see the topics of cyber security, advanced threats and AETs being moved onto the university’s curriculum to underpin the need for in-depth understanding of cyber threats, and to provide on campus, and distance learning courses that are aligned to real world threats.

This is the second AET research partnership Stonesoft has signed with a leading university and it highlights how serious the threat is now viewed.

Stonesoft is providing the university with virtual solutions including its firewall and IPS appliances, to aid the research into cyber security, and the associated threats. The partnership further emphasises the need for vendors to engage with academic institutions and to explore, understand and combat the current age cyber threats and AETs – a clever way of disguising attacks so that they can bypass traditional security appliances and infiltrate systems undetected.

John Walker, visiting professor at School of Computing and Informatics, Nottingham Trent University, said: “The cyber-security landscape is constantly evolving, and the current-day risk is extremely high Academic enterprises must research, prepare to support, and secure commercial business seeking opportunities to develop the next generation of cyber-security professionals by exposing them to real world technologies, where they are able to achieve a better understanding of the threats, which are targeting companies and governments today. Cyber security threats and AETs, offer significant opportunities for cyber criminals to leverage, no matter what profile the threat may arrive in, and as such, are a big part of today’s threatscape.”

Ash Patel, country manager for UK & Ireland, Stonesoft, said: “Nottingham Trent is already well-known for its involvement in the cybersecurity world and we are happy to have them on-board to enhance the understanding of cyber threats and AETs. This is our second partnership and it will help drive further awareness around AETs, a major threat which IT security vendors cannot afford to ignore any longer.”

Stonesoft is also working with the University of Glamorgan which is carrying out field research into AETs in order to establish which vendors are currently able to protect against AETs.
