Treasured toys

78% of people think it is either very or fairly important to keep presents a secret but the places chosen are no secret themselves

November 29, 2012 - With Christmas fast approaching most people will be beginning to think about Christmas presents and what to buy, particularly for children. Finding the perfect present under the tree can be a magical moment and a survey by Safestore and YouGov found that 39% of people have kept a Christmas present they received as a child.

The survey also found that, amongst those who received Christmas presents as a child,a cuddly toy or teddy bear topped the list of most treasured presents with over a quarter (28%) of people listing it.

Top most treasured presents received:
1. A teddy bear or cuddly toy (28%)
2. A bike, rollerblades, scooter, skateboard or BMX (23%)
3. A board game or jigsaw (20%)
=4.Lego and Duplo (17%)
=4.A doll (17%)
=4.Scalextric or train set (17%)
7. An electrical device such as a Walkman, first mobile or PC (13%)
8. A game console such as a Wii or Gameboy or computer games (12%)
=9. An action figure such as Action Man (9%)
=9. A collectible figure set such as Care Bears, Star Wars or My Little Pony (9%)
=9. A doll’s house (9%)

Not surprisingly 78% of people think it is either very or fairly important to keep presents a secret but the places chosen are no secret themselves. 42% of those who buy Christmas presents usually hide them in a cupboard, closely followed by underneath clothes in drawers (26%) or on top of the wardrobe (24%). Other interesting responses included a laundry basket, other people’s houses and even an unused dishwasher.

Dave Cox, Head of Sales and Marketing at Safestore, said: “A lot of time and care is spent on choosing Christmas presents for children so we thought it would be interesting to find out which are still treasured years later. I got a Star Wars Millennium Falcon when I was six and I can still remember the moment when I unwrapped it.”
