Conceptual gardens

the designers aim to turn the relationship with trees on its head with simply executed ideas

Andrew Fisher Tomlin, Tom Harfleet and Paul Harfleet of ‘Harfleet & Harfleet’ have announced their participation in the Ellerslie International Flower Show 2013. This trio of multi-award winning British designers will jointly exhibit the first ever conceptual gardens at next year’s show.

In these conceptual gardens the designers aim to turn the relationship with trees on its head with simply executed ideas. With both gardens the usual view of a tree is subverted using simple structural additions. Fisher Tomlin said “the visitor will be asked to celebrate the beauty of the individual tree itself. By taking the traditional outward focused tree seat and turning it inwards, the visitor is encouraged to examine what is usually behind them”.

In “Sometimes you need to see what’s above you”, periscopes suspended from a tree in North Hagley Park will enable unique views into the detail of the tree’s canopy. Tom Harfleet said “We are aiming for both gardens to work together to create discussion and engagement with existing trees in the park permitting a new perspective on the heritage of North Hagley Park.”

Fisher Tomlin, who will also be the Convenor of Judges at next year’s Ellerslie show, has won awards for his work throughout the United Kingdom and internationally, while Tom Harfleet, working with his brother, won Gold and Best conceptual garden at Hampton Court in 2010 for their first exhibition, “The Pansy Project Garden”. Tom also won silver gilt in 2011 for his Philips-sponsored “Bright Idea” garden.

The 2013 Ellerslie International Flower Show will be held in North Hagley Park, Christchurch, New Zealand from 6 to 10 March 2013. For more information please contact Paul Harfleet on 07870 244153 or Andrew Fisher Tomlin on 07957 855457 or email
