Glucosamine sulphate 2KCl 1000mg £8.45

People taking glucosamine for their joints may live longer, according to a recent US study, published in the European Journal of Epidemiology, from the Cancer Prevention Program, The Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. This study found that people taking glucosamine have significantly lower mortality rates as it appears to protect against a number of common causes of death.
Dr Sarah Brewer, medical nutritionist, says, “This large cohort study, involving 77,510 people, found those taking glucosamine had an 18% lower risk of mortality over an 8 year follow-up period than those not using it. Current use of glucosamine was also associated with a significant 13% decreased risk of death from cancer; a massive 41% reduced risk of death from respiratory disease and a 33% reduction in risk of death from all other causes! This has been attributed to the anti-inflammatory effect of glucosamine, which appears to offer similar advantages to aspirin without the side effects. Importantly, the protective effects remained after accounting for possible confounding biases.”

Dr Adam Carey commented on the story saying: “Glucosamine and chondroitin are taken by large numbers of people to support their joint health. It is interesting to see that the anti-inflammatory benefits of their supplements may be as powerful as Aspirin, but without the bleeding side effects.”

Rachell Hipkiss, Nutritional Biochemist and Healthspan’s Director of Science and Nutrition said: “it’s really exciting to see such a positive, robust study about glucosamine supplementation in relation to mortality due to its ongoing anti-inflammatory benefits.  Healthspan has a comprehensive range of glucosamine products and our Glucosamine 1000mg delivers 40% more glucosamine than other brands and is also suitable for vegetarians."

Healthspan has over eighteen glucosamine products in its portfolio and there are also promising studies on the benefits of glucosamine in relation to arthritis helping to reduce knee pain.*

*The GAIT trial published in the New England Journal of Medicine in February last year studied over 1,500 people suffering from arthritis. Significant efficacy results were proven for glucosamine HCl, when combined with chondroitin, in reducing moderate to severe arthritic knee pain. Moreover, supplementation with this form of glucosamine in conjunction with chondroitin was shown to be more effective than prescription arthritis medication (Celebrex, a COX-II inhibitor which is a type of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory) in those patients with moderate to severe knee pain.
