Schools and colleges can keep their premises open and snow free by using snow clearing equipment readily available in the UK.
One of the UK’s main distributors of snow blowers, Mowdirect, says that schools and colleges can stay open if they invest in this type of machinery developed in the USA and Scandinavia to keep schools and businesses operational.

Snow blowers Mowdirect come in all shapes and sizes from small electrically-powered ones for paths and drives around houses to bigger self-propelled petrol powered ones for larger areas like school playgrounds, paths and parking areas and business forecourts.

Mowdirect general manager Stuart Drake says: “We have sold about 40 of these in the last 24 hours and orders are coming in all the time.
“Several have been bought by schools and academies and several schools in one county bought snow blowers in the autumn.”

They cost from around £350 for a machine which will clear the grounds of smaller premises to over £1000 for more substantial machines for industrial estates and local authority use which are also available on the company’s web site,

Snow blowers work by dragging in the snow via front augers and then blow it away through an adjustable chute. These can clear right back to the original surface – black to black.

Better machines also use an impellor to blast the snow further away and these have a wider clearing width and can deal with deeper falls as they have front snow shoes which are height adjustable.

Snow blowers are designed to be really simple to use and drive and are as easy to handle as a lawnmower.
