79% of people like to celebrate Valentine's Day with more than a card

79% of people like to celebrate Valentine's Day with more than a card

Romance is alive and kicking according to users of the Owners Direct website, many of whom have admitted to getting engaged whilst on holiday.

Research by the UK holiday rentals website in the run-up to Valentine’s Day has found that many people have been proposed to in the most romantic locations including Paris, Prague, Italy, The Maldives and even on the edge of the Grand Canyon – any old restaurant in your home town just won’t do!

As well as the traditional romantic cities of the world, some like to pick more unusual locations to propose including on the ski slopes or at a place significant to them.

“I proposed to my beautiful wife from Colorado at the top of the William Wallace monument in Sterling, Scotland whilst on a trip home to the UK to meet my family. We married two years later in a beautiful villa near Lucca, Italy in the Tuscan hillsides,” admitted one holidaymaker.

“Many moons ago I got engaged on the ski slopes in La Plagne,” said another respondent, “we’ve been happily married ever since but I have never been skiing since!”

Another said: “He proposed outside a beautiful châteaux near Beaune in France with a beautiful ring in his pocket.”

One holidaymaker witnessed a pretty hair-raising proposal taking place in the United States.

“We saw a guy go down on one knee and propose to his girlfriend on the edge of the Grand Canyon. We thought it was very romantic, but a bit scary at the same time!”

In the research, 79% of couples also said they like to celebrate Valentine’s Day in some way with 62% saying they will mark it with more than just a card. 55% said it spoils the special feeling if you don’t celebrate Valentine’s Day on February 14th.

So for those hoping to make a decent proposal this Valentine’s Day, Owners Direct has some last minute escape ideas that are just perfect for romance:
