• Kier officially begins construction to refurbish existing UTC Reading campus

East Reading, UK, 12th February 2012 - UTC Reading, a new University Technical College specialising in Computer Science and Engineering for 14 to 19 year olds, commences its new build and refurbishment programme of the old Thames Valley University site, keeping the project on track for a September 2013 opening. To celebrate this development, a ceremony is being held on 18th February at the Crescent Road site from 10am.

UTC Reading’s Principal Joanne Harper and Vice Principal Wayne Edwards, who have officially been in post since January 2013, will be hosting the launch of Kier’s building and refurbishment work and they will be joined by Chair of Governors for UTC Reading, Lee Nicholls. Joanne and Wayne will be providing an overview of all landmark successes to date as well as confirming the timeline for further activities. A selection of students who have already accepted offers will be in attendance, as well as representatives from academic and industry partners including Network Rail, Cisco, Peter Brett Associates, Logica (now part of CGI) and the University of Reading.

Joanne Harper, Principal of UTC Reading, comments: “There are only eight months left until UTC Reading opens so we’re delighted to be able to announce that it’s full steam ahead for the building work. This ceremony is a great opportunity to invite students already due to attend UTC Reading to visit the campus for the first time and find out how the site will be developed into a state-of-the-art learning centre for computer science and engineering. What better way to celebrate the fact that everything is going according to plan than to invite everyone interested or involved to come down to the site to see for themselves where the magic will happen.”

The Crescent Road site was officially hoarded off and investigations took place immediately after Christmas to ensure the project remained on time and internal finishes and furniture requirements are just being finalised. The campus is due to have buildings dedicated to areas of specialism in Computer Science, Engineering and related project work, as well as brand new centres to include facilities for music, art, model making and media.
