Kirklees Council is shaving costs and enhancing social care by embracing a Bring your own device (BYOD) approach using Excitor’s DME solution from Ecommnet.

Ecommnet, Newcastle Upon Tyne, February 14th 2013. There’s no getting away from it; in the mobile world employees want to bring their own devices and smartphones to work. Alongside this, IT departments want to reduce costs, control data security, improve efficiency and improve front line services. Kirklees Council is facing and finding a way to deal with these challenges through smart innovation.

Smartphones are great for tasks like email and managing appointments as well as for calls, and enabling BYOD presented Kirklees with the opportunity to save substantial hardware cost.

The challenge arises when those personal devices get lost or sensitive council data is exposed. Also, would employees really allow their personal information on their phones to be controlled by the IT department?

John Clayton, Principal Officer at Kirklees Council commented; “We wanted to cut costs and innovate at the same time – show that we can do things differently. The challenge was how to enable BYOD AND protect both council and personal information. We trialled a competitor product for 6 weeks but it became clear that support was poor and key issues could not be easily resolved.

We turned to Ecommnet and their DME solution from Excitor. They sent a senior member of their team in and after just two days onsite DME was up and running and users were migrated from the other product. It was a huge relief and we now have over 200 employees effectively using the solution."

DME now allows those working in core public services like social care to benefit from 24x7 secure access to mobile data, which means they can be even more responsive to urgent issues.

John continued: “If a difficult or urgent issue arises staff can have any important notes or documentation sent to their smartphone. They can make a decision there and then without having to plug in and start up a computer and then check and respond to email.

Using Excitor’s DME from Ecommnet we are gradually eliminating ongoing smartphone spend; it’s fantastic – happier staff and lower costs.”

Robert Campbell MD at Ecommnet: "It’s great to see how Kirklees is now able to support an employee driven BYOD policy while still managing data security and not impinging on personal information. We’re proud to be part of that, especially seeing the difference it’s making in terms of cost and the improvements they’re passing on in the service they’re providing to their constituents."
