A leading flood risk assessment service has identified ten UK destinations at low risk from river and tidal floods – but high risk from surface water flooding.
Analysis published by the online flood report provider, RiskCentral.co.uk, reveals that many of the UK’s inland tourist destinations are at a high risk from flooding despite being located far away from rivers or the sea.
Sites identified as “at risk” include Buckingham Palace, the Emirates Stadium in London, Alton Towers Theme Park and Milton Keynes Shopping Centre. RiskCentral’s analysis is supported by video and documented evidence of surface water flooding events at many of these locations.
Surface water flooding, which occurs when heavy rainfall saturates drainage systems, actually poses a greater risk to British homes and businesses than any other source of flooding. According to DEFRA, 2.8 million homes are at risk from surface water compared to 1.4 million from rivers and the sea.
The publication of RiskCentral’s analysis follows the recent news that flood insurance payouts in 2012 were the highest for 5 years. According to the Association of British Insurers (ABI), the cost of claims last year topped £1 billion following the wettest recorded year in England and Wales.
The ABI’s publication of these figures highlights the increasing risk posed by surface water floods year-on-year. Dr. Justin Butler, managing director of Ambiental Technical Solutions Ltd, the company behind RiskCentral, says:
“We conducted analysis on ten well known tourist destinations in the UK, to highlight the pervasive risk of surface water flooding to buildings across the country. With flooding now the greatest natural threat to businesses and homes in the UK, we want home owners and buyers to be more aware of the potential risks to their property”.

RiskCentral is provided by Ambiental, a specialist flood risk modelling company led by Dr. Justin Butler, a leading expert in international flood risk mapping and modelling. Ambiental has taken very high detail topographic / terrain data for the whole UK and have used this in conjunction with complex computer models to analyse water flow around individual buildings within the landscape. Based on the computer modelled flood water level, a predicted area of inundation, or flood zone, can be mapped out. Three types of flood modelling were carried out by Ambiental on behalf of RiskCentral: fluvial (river) flood; coastal / tidal; and pluvial (surface water). The overall flood risk score, featured in full reports, is calculated by searching at lightning speed through each of these individual flood databases, hosted in the Cloud, to see if a specific location falls within or near one of these pre-defined flood zones. RiskCentral reports provide consumers with invaluable information relating to flood risk and recommendations for dealing with it.
