• OpenSignal receives award from Ed Vaizey, UK Minister for Culture, Communications and Creative Industries
• Crowdsourced mapping improves mobile signal and discovers free WiFi
Mobile World Congress, Barcelona - OpenSignal, provider of accurate crowdsourced mobile coverage maps, has won the Smart UK Project award for the UK’s Most Innovative Mobile Company 2013.
OpenSignal CEO, Brendan Gill received the award on behalf of the company from Ed Vaizey, the UK’s Minister for Culture, Communications and Creative Industries, at Mobile World Congress, the largest mobile industry event in the world.
OpenSignal provides accurate mobile coverage maps through crowdsourcing via an app that checks mobile coverage wherever the user is to deliver the best network coverage to users. The company also provides a database of 100 million WiFi access points across 200 countries. With this data OpenSignal is able to help users locate a better mobile phone signal, find nearby free WiFi networks and monitor their data usage.
Geoff McCormick, one of the judges of the Smart UK Project said: “The quality of the finalists: Made in Mind; OpenSignal; Paddle; RealVNC and Skin Analytics was incredible. The judges’ decision was strongly influenced by the value that OpenSignal brings to mobile users by providing them with the best signal for their phone.”
Brendan Gill, CEO, Open Signal, says: “We were stunned to win the award. The UK is such a hotbed of innovation and the quality of the finalists was so high. We are delighted to win.”
The competition, run in association with UK Trade & Investment (UKTI), began its search for UK’s most innovative mobile company in November 2012, with 70 original entries. OpenSignal saw off strong competition during the final judging from the four other finalists: Made in Mind; Paddle; RealVNC and Skin Analytics.
All five finalists pitched before an expert judging panel consisting of Mike Short (Vice President of Telefonica Europe), Fred Lardieg (Principal at Octopus Ventures), Geoff McCormick (Director of TheAlloy), Ewan MacLeod (Mobile Industry Review), Tim Green (Founder of Mobile Money Revolution) and Neil Crockett (CEO, Connected Digital Economy Catapult).
The OpenSignal app is available free for Android devices and a version for iOS devices is imminent.
