Industry partner Microsoft Opens Its Doors To Students Interested In
UTC Reading To Showcase What The New Facility Has To Offer
East Reading, UK, 8th March 2013 - UTC Reading, the new University Technical College specialising in Computer Science and Engineering for 14 to 19 year olds, opening in September 2013, is pleased to announce that industry partner Microsoft will be hosting a taster event on 14th March from 5.30-7.30pm. Prospective students and those who have already accepted a place, are invited to come along with their parents and friends to find out more about UTC Reading and what value industry and academic partners will be adding.
Microsoft has some exciting activities lined up on the night for everyone to get involved with. Xboxes will be available to try out and Lee Scott, Academic Evangelist from Microsoft, will be using Gadgeteer to build a digital camera and explain step by step how this can be done. UTC Reading’s ICT Provider, European Electronique, will also be making a range of laptops and tablets available for students to test and vote upon which device they would prefer to use at UTC Reading. Steve Beswick, Microsoft's Head of Education UK, will be in attendance and will open the event with a few words about the importance of industry and academia working together to produce students ready for the workplace.
Steve Beswick, Director of Education for Microsoft, comments: “UTC Reading represents a further deepening of our commitment to developing talent and ensuring the UK continues to produce world class computer science and programming graduates. This underlines Microsoft’s strategy of transforming the way technology is used and taught in schools and I’m delighted to invite interested parties to visit our offices to find out more about what UTC Reading offers in line with this.”
At the Taster Event, all partners will be available to speak to interested parties about their individual commitments to UTC Reading and the involvement they have had in shaping the curriculum and ensuring the skills students will develop are needed by the industry. Instead of companies having to import employees with the skills they desperately need in engineering or computer science, UTC Reading students will be taught those invaluable skills throughout their education.
Joanne Harper, Principal, UTC Reading, comments: “Microsoft’s Taster Event is the perfect opportunity for individuals with a growing interest in Computer Science or Engineering to come along and see how UTC Reading promotes learning through doing and places a firm emphasis on developing practical skills as well as academic. Microsoft, along with our other partners Cisco, Network Rail, Peter Brett Associates, The University of Reading and The Oxford & Cherwell Valley College, will be allowing students to get involved with some fantastic activities and really experience what it would be like to attend UTC Reading.”
Youngsters and parents interested in UTC Reading’s specialisms are invited to visit Microsoft on 14th March at 5.30pm at its premises in Reading; Building 3, Thames Valley Park, Reading, West Berkshire RG6 1WG.
