Digital Writing Technology dramatically speeds up Midwives’ Administration to meet PbR Payments

London, UK – 11th March 2013 Anoto, creator of digital writing technology, together with its platinum partner DevelopIQ, a mobile data capture specialist, today announced that its digital writing technology together with BlackBerry smartphones is being used to comply with the up and coming Maternity Pathway Tariff, which goes into effect on 1st of April, 2013. Anoto’s patented digital writing technology, used in combination with DevelopIQ’s PaperIQ platform, enables NHS Trusts to effectively record its Payment by Results (PbR) and Maternity Pathway Tariff data and share it electronically, without burdening the IT or midwifery teams with additional paper work.

Ashford and St. Peter’s NHS Foundation Trust installed Anoto’s digital writing technology and DevelopIQ’s PaperIQ platform, combined with mobile technologies from BlackBerry, in under two weeks to meet PbR and Maternity Pathway Tariff requirements. It immediately found that it streamlined the administrative processes required for the Maternity Pathway Tariff and sped up the payments to the Trust, as information is now shared digitally with governing bodies at the touch of a button.

Under the new Maternity Pathway Tariff, Trusts will see the Maternity Pathway split into three periods: Antenatal, Birth and Postnatal episodes. At the start of each period, the expectant mother will be assessed and assigned a level of care, after which the Trusts will receive one payment per period based on the assessment treatment level. These are set to Standard, Intermediate and Intensive. Once the assessment is complete, each Trust is responsible for determining how many visits the expecting mothers will make during the course of the pregnancy and the type of treatment that they will receive.

“With the NHS mandatory maternity activity coding changing in April 2013, we decided to meet this challenge by procuring a digital pen solution that will allow midwives to capture risk assessment data for expectant mothers,” says Ashford St. Peter’s NHS Foundation Trust’s Head of Informatics Programme Management, Laura Ellis-Philip. “Without this information, the Trust could be paid at a lower tariff for high risk patients, leading to a substantial loss of income. Due to the importance of this project, we decided that DevelopIQ should be delivering the digital pen solution due to its strong background in supplying digital pens to the NHS.”
