SPORTS LEADERS UK applauds the recent Government announcement about plans to invest £150M each year for the next two years, to transform Primary school sport and physical education.

“This is the single most significant initiative to deliver the legacy of the London 2012 Games”, says Chief Executive, Linda Plowright. We are particularly encouraged by the cross-departmental approach involving Departments of Education, Health and the Department of Culture, Media and Sport. This gives a very strong message that Government fully understands the importance of sport and physical activity in improving the lives of young people. Sports Leaders UK is looking forward to making a very strong contribution.”
Direct ring-fenced funding for sport will enable Primary Schools to invest in PE specialists and specialist teacher training, coaching, sports programs and clubs after school. , And with Sports Leaders UK qualifications and awards already at the heart of many of these schools, the charity feels it is perfectly placed to deliver on the new strategy.

“Our tutor training, our work with Primary School Energy Clubs, our awards and our forthcoming subject-based qualification with the Association of Physical Education means we are already at the centre of this brave new agenda. A recent OFSTED report highlighted the nationwide work Sports Leaders UK already does in PE and in school sport in general. It recognised the positive outcomes schools achieve from delivering our awards and qualifications and I am sure we will continue to support schools in the new OFSTED inspections, and to be recognised and achieve excellent performance in school sport.”

As a founder member of COMPASS the new trade association for providers of physical activity and school sport, Sports Leaders UK also applauds the holistic approach to getting our young children active. This new culture of sport will inspire all children not just those who are inspired by the performances of the Games who will have access to specialist coaching but also those who just want to have fun and be more active. The announcement also identifies a greater role for “Britain’s best sporting and voluntary organisations” within school provision and the community.

“We are already working with a huge base of sporting, National Governing Bodies in the UK,” continued Linda Plowright. “It’s also an added bonus to learn that the Young Ambassador programme is to remain in place, as, Sports Leaders UK qualifications underpin the journey that young Leaders have made to become Young Ambassadors.”

“All of this points to Sports Leaders UK continuing to have a huge role to play in propagating the new culture of sport to inspire and coach every child. We are in the right place to deliver inspirational sports leadership training for teachers, programs and awards for Primary aged children that are fun-based, physically active and can inspire them to get active for life. ”
