Major high street supermarket, Waitrose, has introduced
self-scanning to its stores in a new move to cut customer
time at the checkout.

The Waitrose initiative, which will enhance the entire
shopping experience for customers, uses integrated systems
from ICL and Symbol Technologies.

The system is based around Symbol Technologies Portable
Shopping System, LST3803. This hand-held terminal

bills as they fill their trolleys. The customer then returns
the PSS to a special dispenser, where a bar coded bill is
automatically printed to be taken to a dedicated express

Quick Check is also installed in four other stores (Reading,
Ruislip, Wokingham and Finchley) and roll-out to a further

Waitrose and John Lewis account members are automatically

can get a card at the customer services desk to release the
terminal and try Quick Check, at the same time being able to
apply for their own account card.
