Social Gaming platforms’ reward is MySQL at million user global scale

LONDON, UK - 10 April 2013 – SkySQL, the trusted provider of open source database services, has announced GamePoint, the Dutch-headquartered social gaming platform, as its latest customer. On GamePoint, a player competes against others using virtual currency to play familiar offline games such as Chess, Darts and Bingo to an online platform.

Launched in 1998, GamePoint currently hosts one million users who spend close to one billion minutes on its games per month. The company needed help managing the databases as the amount of data going through its platform, coupled with 60% growth in membership in the past quarter have put pressure on the efficiency and reliability of the databases. Previously, GamePoint’s MySQL databases were looked after by Michael de Groot, IT Director, and his team at GamePoint.

Getting database fixes quickly to ensure MySQL databases were running properly was the main challenge for de Groot. He said: “With the recent success at GamePoint we have more players playing on the platform which meant we only had time to look at urgent issues. We could not test everything in the database so we often could not see what is wrong quickly. Ultimately those unresolved problems lead to longer downtime.”

Therefore, de Groot looked for a company who can provide him with detailed analysis of the database and its problems, as well as solutions for them. SkySQL was chosen to provide support due to its talent and history with the MySQL product. SkySQL has provided GamePoint with MySQL cluster consultancy and durability fixes which makes it scale quicker.
