Last month Liz celebrated 40 years of service with Rudells, a fantastic achievement.
Rudell the Jewellers proudly celebrated their 75th anniversary in February. Over the years there have been many changes and the company has gone from strength to strength. Nobody has seen more change than their very own Ambassador Liz Baggott who is celebrating a milestone of her own. Last month Liz celebrated 40 years of service with Rudells, a fantastic achievement.
Liz’s first memories of Rudells go back to when she was a little girl and often used to come into town with her mother. She recalls how her mother always used to browse the windows at Rudells last thing before going home. As Liz grew up she also became gripped by the stunning jewellery in the window and always looked as she waited for her bus home from school. Rudells portrayed a glamorous image to her, and being a girl from the country, she remembers how glamorous the girls were with their blonde hair and long fingers nails painted with red nail varnish.
In 1973 she saw an advertisement in the local paper for a sales assistant and swiftly applied. She recalls that during her interview Mr Justin Rudell asked, ‘Why do you want to work at Rudells?’ to which she replied, ‘Because I like to work with beautiful things’. Liz was offered the job there and then and remembers Mr Justin Rudell saying to his son Anthony that he didn’t require any references for Liz, but Anthony insisted that they did. A few days later Liz went to a fancy dress party, at which she was introduced, by a friend, to a gentleman by the name of Anthony Rudell, the friend not knowing that Anthony was Liz’s new employer. She was dressed a Spanish Senorita and Anthony was dressed as a giant baby, complete with vest, nappy and baby bottle, at that point Liz remembers thinking ‘Dressed as that, I think I might need a reference for you!’
Liz remembers how the store started at a third of the size it is now and has since seen several expansions and refurbishments of the 97 Darlington Street showroom. The latest being the jewel in our crown. Our new Rolex and Patek Philippe branded areas give our watch shop a real London boutique feel. We have also recently had a stunning Mikimoto cabinet installed, a brand which ranks amongst Liz’s favourites. Over the years she recalls seeing some stunning one off items of jewellery, as well as unusual pieces from many different manufacturers. After 40 years she has seen various styles of jewellery come in and go out of fashion and then come back in again. A piece which Liz recently saw and instantly loved was a white gold heart pendant by Waskoll, set with different coloured sapphires, anyone who knows Liz knows that she loves coloured stones.
Over the years Liz has built up relationships with many customers, a lot of which have become friends. It is a rare thing in this day and age to find people with such commitment and to show the same passion for their job that they showed 40 years ago. I asked Liz what had inspired her over the years and she told me that as well as working with beautiful things, she works with beautiful people, which gives the place a real feeling of a family. She is very humble and says she owes a lot to the people she has worked with over the years. She explains that her loyal service is down to the fact that Rudells have always been loyal to her and after all this time it still gives her great pleasure to walk through the door.
Rudell the Jewellers showrooms are based in Wolverhampton and Harborne, Birmingham; they are renowned for the finest quality jewellery and customer service in the Midlands since 1938.
